 P/T - Reading Room Assistant, Morgan Library & Museum (NY)

The Morgan Library & Museum seeks a part-time Reading Room Assistant. Reporting to the Head of Reader Services, the position assists researchers in the Reading Room while maintaining the security and preservation of the collections. The assistant is also responsible for retrieving and organizing materials for readers and staff and performs desk duties as required.

Responsibilities: 
  • Provide orientation, direction, and assistance, including some reference help to a wide variety of readers
  • Assist readers with sign-in and proper handling of rare and reference materials
  • Interpret and enforce the Morgan’s policies and regulations as they apply to the Reading Room
  • Track circulation of rare and reference materials in the Reading Room
  • Assist readers and staff with questions regarding requests and orders for digital images and photocopies
  • Locate, charge, and deliver materials from the vault and closed book stacks
  • Re-shelve rare and reference materials, as necessary, by the end of day
  • Maintain Reading Room shelves by participating in shifting and other stacks maintenance projects
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Reader Services, identify materials for conservation treatment and route as appropriate
  • Other projects as assigned
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree and MLS required; a strong background in the humanities (art history, history, or literature) with a focus on rare books and manuscripts preferred
  • Previous library work experience in a special collections library reading room a plus
  • Must possess excellent judgment and awareness of security protocols and procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse library users and staff in person, by telephone, and by email
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to sustain close attention to detail
  • Familiarity with a major Western foreign language preferred (i.e.: French, German, or Italian)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications, especially Word, Excel, and Access
  • Familiarity with Voyager or TMS a plus
  • Commitment to providing high quality service, working effectively with others in a team environment, and be responsive to changing needs and priorities
  • Ability to lift heavy books and boxes (25–30 lbs.), extensive walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, climbing up stairs, and pushing heavy carts with books or boxes
