Publicly traded Burford Capital is the largest provider of commercial finance to the legal sector in the world, with a core expertise in identifying and optimizing the value of legal assets for companies and law firms. Since its founding in 2009, Burford has grown to over 130 people including over 60 lawyers, and has worked with 90 of the Global 100 largest law firms.
We are looking to add a Research Associate to support our legal and finance professionals. This is primarily a business research position - it focuses on the business of law rather than the practice of law. Research experience in a legal setting is a plus but is not a requirement.
As you will work at the cutting edge of a new industry, the diverse requests that come to you will not always be achievable, but always be interesting. This is an excellent opportunity for a savvy researcher seeking an “outside the box” position to apply ingenuity and creativity to uncovering answers that matter to the business.
This position will be based in our NYC or Chicago offices. (While Burford employees are currently able to work from home or in the office, we are looking to hire someone who can commute to either the NYC or the Chicago offices in the future. This is not a permanent remote position.)
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct custom research on a broad variety of legal, financial and news databases
- Identify business prospects and ways to reach them; research and correct information on contacts and prospects
- Track and share information on litigation finance, industry competitors, and the business of law
- Provide statistics from public sources for company filings, thought leadership, blog posts, marketing collateral etc.
- Master legal analytics sources and research the underlying legal cases as appropriate
- Monitor legal databases and press sources for developments that might impact cases in the investment portfolio
- Connect requestors to internal and external resources they can use to uncover information themselves
- Research and assess new resource options, arranging demos and trials where appropriate
- Work with vendors to acquire and administer resources
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in Library Science OR documented library reference experience
- Demonstrated database retrieval and web search skills
- 2+ years in a professional services setting
- Interest in the business of law rather than practice of law
- Law firm/law department experience is a plus but not a requirement
