Created by BPL information literacy experts in partnership with Syracuse University Information School, Information Literacy for Library Professionals is a self-paced, online course for library staff of all titles serving in a public service capacity. The course launched in early 2021 for BPL workers and staff and is being prepared for a statewide rollout in late fall. Under the supervision of the project lead, the Program Coordinator/Instructor will oversee all recruitment, outreach, enrollment, instruction support, and summary reporting for the course.
Information Literacy Instruction for Library Professionals is a continuing education course created to train library service staff the effective dissemination of information literacy skills to the general public. The course focuses on three foundational competencies: the research process, information literacy, and instructional strategies and techniques.
The Program Coordinator/Instructor position is a temporary, 12 month grant-funded position, reporting to BPL’s Director of Customer Experience. This is a non-union, exempt position through July 31, 2022.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lead course instructor and ambassador for the statewide rollout of Information Literacy for Library Professionals, a self-paced online professional development course for library public service staff throughout New York State.
- Develop and implement a marketing and outreach campaign in concert with the New York Library Association (NYLA), its network of members and sections of affiliated professionals.
- Conduct targeted outreach to regional library systems who can share the course offerings with local libraries.
- Serve as lead course instructor for the BPL instance of Information Literacy for Library Professionals; working with library supervisors to hit course enrollment and graduation targets within the BPL organization.
- Provide guidance and support to course participants throughout the learning process. Be able to provide clarity, answer questions, review student work, assign final grading.
- Participate in all course analysis and redesign meetings in order to become thoroughly knowledgeable about executing the intended course outcomes and learning objectives.
- Assist in writing, presenting and reporting about the project in professional journals and conferences.
- Some state-wide travel may be required
Qualifications
Education and/or Certification
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Pursuit of an ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science, Education or other related field a benefit
Skills & Abilities
- 3+ years demonstrated experience designing and executing training and learning material for an adult audience
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including the ability to serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for the Library
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess problems, and decisively implement appropriate solutions or recommendations
- Ability to work well independently and collaboratively to get things accomplished
- Creativity, flexibility, and initiative in accommodating community and staff needs
- Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Knowledge and understanding of library issues, library and information technologies; library policies and procedures
- Ability to travel as needed
