Curatorial Assistant


The American Numismatic Society seeks two full-time, temporary curatorial assistants. These are full-time (30-40 hours per week), project-based temporary positions (approximately three to four months) to photograph and catalogue the American Numismatic Society’s collection of East Asian coins, which numbers approximately 50,000 objects. Approximately 45,000 of these need documentary photography. The bulk of the collection consists of Chinese coins and other monetary objects, ranging from antiquity to the present. These two positions entail photographing objects using a simple photography apparatus, renaming individual photo files, and updating catalogue entries in the collection database where needed. The successful candidates will be willing and able to work at a rapid pace to meet project goals. While computer skills are required, knowledge of photography and Chinese is not. The ideal applicant is someone with museum experience or seeking to gain it.
Location
Work must be performed in the office at the Society’s headquarters at 75 Varick Street in lower Manhattan. The work cannot be performed remotely or on a hybrid arrangement.
Compensation
The rate of pay is $30/hour.

F/T - Metadata Specialist II, NYPL

New York Public Library is seeking Metadata Specialist II applicants for two position openings. The application deadline is April 26, 2026.

Overview
The New York Public Library (NYPL) is one of the world's great public research libraries. Its research centers provide opportunities for engagement with in-depth and unique collections, inspirational reading rooms, exhibitions, programs, and a range of research services. Collections and Research Services encompasses several departments focused on managing the ongoing development of our exceptional research collections, advancing unified discovery and expanded access, both in-person and online, and ensuring stewardship of the collections at every stage of the collections lifecycle. Within the Digital Collections Operations department, the Metadata Services Unit (MSU) supports access and discovery of the Library's digital assets through the creation and management of descriptive metadata, strengthening data interoperability across the Library, and guiding its metadata strategy.

Reporting to the Manager, Metadata Services, the Metadata Specialist II contributes to metadata initiatives focused on describing digitized and born-digital research collections made available through NYPL Digital Collections. Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail are crucial for ensuring quality metadata creation, approvals, and remediation within our collaborative team, which manages over 2.5 million records. This is an ideal opportunity for a proactive individual who can quickly synthesize complex information and is dedicated to making unique, historically significant collections accessible to the public.

Note: We are filling two openings. Each position will liaise with a combination of 4–6 divisions of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Library located at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building that will be determined by subject expertise and interest. Collections supported may include manuscripts, archives, rare books, maps, prints, photography, image clippings, and/or reference works about art and architecture.

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Metadata Services, the Metadata Specialist II will:
  • Serve as the Metadata Services Unit's primary liaison for 4–6 divisions of the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Library located at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building
  • Actively contribute to the creation, approval, and enhancement of descriptive metadata for corresponding digital collections
  • Provide consultation for division staff and metadata partners through planning, training, and guidance on metadata standards and local practices
  • Participate in large-scale remediation, reparative description, targeted enhancement, and migration projects to improve discovery and access of digital assets, including an upcoming system migration to a new Digital Asset Management System (DAMS)
  • Work closely with Library colleagues involved in digitization, digital asset management, and description including rights clearance, permissions, digital imaging, cataloging, archival processing, exhibitions, et al.
  • Keep current with emerging standards, trends, and technologies in the field
  • Perform other related duties as necessary

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Master's degree in a relevant discipline such as library and information science, archival studies, information management, data science, and/or public history

  • Experience with metadata creation, remediation, reconciliation, and/or enhancement in the context of libraries, archives, museums, or other collecting institutions (can include coursework or internships)
  • Experience working with manuscripts, archives, rare books, maps, prints, photographs, image clippings, and/or art and architecture reference collections (can include coursework or internships)
Required Skills
  • Demonstrated competency with metadata schemas and standards (MODS, Dublin Core, METS, VRA Core, MARC/RDA, EAD/DACS, etc.), controlled vocabularies (Library of Congress, Getty Vocabularies, Wikidata, etc.), and data formats (XML, JSON, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently on complex projects that involve diverse stakeholders
  • Capacity to manage a large volume of work across simultaneous projects while maintaining a consistently high degree of accuracy

Assistant Librarian (Part Time Position)

Position Overview:

The New York School of Interior Design, an accredited, independent institution of higher education devoted entirely to the discipline of interior design and its related professions, seeks an individual to serve as an Assistant Librarian. Reporting to the Director of the Library, the Assistant Librarian supports the day-to-day operations of the Library’s public services and the two materials libraries. The Assistant Librarian is an integral part of the Library’s public services team for providing instructional, reference, and circulating services to library users. During the closing shifts and in the absence of the other Librarians, the Assistant Librarian manages the Library’s circulation and reference desk and supervises student workers. The Assistant Librarian performs a variety of system maintenance tasks, such as updating the Library’s website and online subject guides and maintaining other electronic tools and platforms pertaining to public services. The Assistant Librarian may need to perform tasks and projects related to the NYSID Archives & Special Collections.


Job Responsibilities:

·         Assist in the operations of circulation and reference services and delivering library instruction sessions to NYSID students, faculty and staff; answer reference queries and help patrons locate items and resources in the library and archives, and through online databases.

·         Manage the day-to-day public services operations and supervise student workers during closing shifts and in the absence of the other Librarians.

·         Assist in managing the two materials libraries on the main campus and at the Graduate Center.

·         Assist in coordinating the schedule and content of the Library’s instruction program; conduct any library instruction sessions assigned within their schedule.

·         Working with other librarians, update the Library’s website and online subject guidelines on a regular basis to ensure the accuracy and currency of the information and content represented on those online platforms.

·         Resolve technical issues related to the Library’s online resources.

·         Working with other librarians, actively explore and implement new library/information technologies pertaining to the Library’s public and instructional services.

·         Perform tasks and projects related to the NYSID Archives & Special Collections on an as-needed basis.

·         Other duties, projects and activities as may become necessary.

Qualifications:

MLS from an ALA-accredited institution (candidates pursuing an MLS degree at an ALA-accredited institution will also be considered). Bachelors in art history, fine arts, design, or architecture preferred. Some circulation and reference experience in an academic and research library environment highly desirable. Experience using an integrated library system, particularly its circulation module, desirable. Former teaching or library instruction experience highly desirable. Proficiency in WordPress, LibGuides, Omeka, and other library and information technologies pertaining to library public and instructional services. Strong technical skills of evaluating and employing a variety of new Web tools, systems platforms, and social media channels to facilitate and promote library services and operations. Proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Excellent oral and written communication skills for lectures, presentations, and working with library/archives users and staff. Professional committee memberships/activities in related organizations, such as ARLIS/NA, VRA, AASL, ALA, or ACRL, desirable. Ability to work independently, be flexible, have high attention to detail, a proactive problem solver. Friendly, with strong service orientation and good people skills. A commitment to user-oriented library services. General knowledge of art, architecture, and design research resources preferred. Ability to perform physical activities associated with library collections.


Salary: $25.00 per hour

This is a part-time position. 16 - 18 hours per week work schedule. Required to cover evening and/or weekend hours during the academic year.

Preferred Qualifications:

Brief Description of Duties:
Reporting to the Director of the Health Sciences Library, the Clinical Information Scientist provides research assistance as well as instruction to the faculty, residents, fellows, and clinicians within Stony Brook Medicine's Department of Graduate Medical Education (GME). The Clinical Information Scientist will also engage in outreach and provide research services to clinicians across Stony Brook Medicine's hospitals, centers, and outpatient care facilities. The Clinical Information Scientist will be expected to participate in research, scholarship, and professional activities. 

 

  • Establish relationships with the various Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program Directors to ensure they are aware of the research services available through the Health Sciences Library. 

  • Develop and deliver instructional sessions on research-related topics, such as literature searching and evidence-based medicine to residents, fellows, and clinicians. 

  • Provide in-depth research consultations to residents, fellows, and clinicians as needed for course-related and independent research activities. 

  • Develop search strategies for systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and meta-analyses. 

  • Engage in outreach to Stony Brook Medicine's outpatient and inpatient care facilities, in order to provide research and evidence-based medicine support to clinicians. 

     

    Handle research and data inquiries from Stony Brook Medicine's research facilities, affiliates, and partners.

  • Create and maintain research guides and asynchronous learning modules.

  • Support new initiatives and special projects across the organization.

  • Work collaboratively across the Health Sciences Library to provide general reference/research support. 

  • Participate in library, campus, and professional committees.

  • Engage in professional development, particularly in the areas of emerging technologies. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Lloyd Sealy Library at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a Web and User Experience Librarian to lead and direct our digital presence, commencing in late August 2026. This is a faculty position. The candidate would be appointed at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will manage the Library’s website and digital communications. They will work collaboratively with colleagues from all areas of the Library and other stakeholders to identify Library and user needs, and ensure communications are accurate, effective, consistent and accessible. They will participate fully in the Library’s reference and instruction program.

All our Library faculty teach and provide reference services and have responsibility for specific Library functions.

Candidates are expected to bring enthusiasm and demonstrated commitment to teaching and to develop and maintain an active research and publication agenda. The successful candidate must be eager and qualified to work with our diverse student body. This position reports to the Chief Librarian. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Library’s website

  • Be responsible for the content, functionality, accessibility and usability of the Library website, currently on the Springshare platform.

  • Work closely with the IT Academic Applications Director and serve as primary liaison to the platform vendor for technical issues.

  • Create workflows incorporating ongoing collaboration with Library faculty to ensure veracity and accuracy of website content.

  • Manage the Library’s social media, blogs and marketing and promotion of Library events and resources.

  • Advise library colleagues on best practices for creating web content.

  • Make evidence-based changes based on usability testing and current web usability research.

  • Collaborate with college educational technologists to ensure effective library presence on the college learning management system (Brightspace).

2. Reference services and teaching

  • Provide reference services in-person and virtually, and teach information literacy one-shot classes and workshops, in person and virtual, for undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Collaborate with the information literacy librarian to create digital tools to support learning.

3. Additional assignments

  • Provide excellent customer service in support of our community.

  • Participate in a work culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Actively participate in relevant committees and working groups to establish shared goals, practices and policies in collaboration with colleagues within the Library, the college and across the university.

QUALIFICATIONS

For appointment at the rank of instructor, a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. An instructor is required to complete a second graduate degree within 5 years to advance to assistant professor rank. For a degree at CUNY, tuition benefits are available (6

credits per fall/spring semester). Also required is the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, a second graduate degree is required in addition to a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution. The successful candidate must have potential for scholarly productivity and have the ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in creating and maintaining websites following current best practices using Springshare suite of tools or similar platform.

  • Skills in applying best practices and current standards to website and other digital content, including accessibility.

  • Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, able to write clearly and concisely with experience in creating online content.

COMPENSATION
