Brooklyn Historical Society invites applications for the position of Director of Library & Archives. The position reports to BHS’ President and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of BHS’ library and archives program. The Director of Library & Archives supervises library and collections staff, including the Special Collection Librarian and Photographic Archivist and various grant-funded full and part time staff. The successful candidate will be a creative, experienced and forward-looking librarian dedicated to serving a diverse range of patrons and supporting BHS mission to connect the past to the present and make the vibrant history of Brooklyn tangible, relevant and meaningful for today's diverse communities, and for generations to come.
The Director is responsible for providing leadership, vision, planning and management for the library, including overseeing staff; developing and maintaining budgets, policies and procedures; planning and managing grant-funded projects; and developing long-range priorities for collection development, management, preservation, and access to the library and archives. The position plays a key role in the senior staff of the larger institution, participating in institutional planning;  working with the Director of Development to identify funding opportunities and write grants; and collaborating with education, exhibition and oral history staff on integrating library and archives work with the activities of the institution.
Required Qualifications:
  • Masters in Library and Information Science, or equivalent degree, with a specialization in archival studies or special collections.
  • Minimum of four years successful experience in special collections and/or archives
  • Evidence of effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Flexibility in adapting to organizational change and growth and to ever-changing technological environments
  • Evidence of strong leadership, budgeting, project management and organizational skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation, with a commitment to serving a diverse patron base.
  • Supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaboration.
  • Demonstrable experience in seeking and administering grant funding
  • Experience in soliciting, acquiring, organizing, and maintaining collections
  • Knowledge of current practices related to the identification, access, control, organization and digitization of primary source materials, including metadata schemas, digital processes and trends in delivering collections electronically
  • Computer/technology competence; aptitude for learning and applying new technologies and information tools to library operations
Preferred qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in History, American Studies, or relevant academic field.
  • Experience working in a museum setting or in supporting exhibit development and design
  • Experience with records management in print and electronic formats
  • Experience with WordPress content management system
  • Experience with Archivists’ Toolkit
  • Knowledge of preservation issues and best practices
Salary: $75,000 - $80,000 annual salary with full benefits including medical and dental.

Job Description:

The Knowledge and Research Specialist will assist with content writing and editing, web production, and social media activities within the organization. This position will allow a qualified candidate to be at the center of our growing Knowledge Management program by creating and producing content generated from our events and promoting our organization through social media.

Basic Responsibilities:

  • Create approximately 150 detailed write-ups (or “snapshots”) of presentations given at ANA events that summarize the content presented.
  • Travel to approximately 20 to 25 ANA events held outside of NYC to capture “snapshot” content.
  • Assist in the creation of 8 to 10 page knowledge products based on existing ANA content.
  • Support web content production, by posting and laying out pieces of content on the ANA website, as needed.
  • Opportunity to blog about ANA content and industry issues monthly.


Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate should have:
  • A master’s degree in library and information science (MLS) or a related master’s degree (such as journalism or communications).
  • 2+ years of work experience in a role requiring information analysis and interpretation.
  • Strong writing skills are a requirement. Good copyediting skills are also a plus.
  • Desire to travel.
  • An interest in social media and blogging.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • High degree of professionalism and integrity.
  • High energy and results oriented.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology is seeking a Technical Reference Librarian which reports to the Director of Reference and works primarily as the library's liaison to assigned engineering or other academic departments for reference, information literacy instruction, assessment, collection development, and user satisfaction.  Also performs literature searching and citation analysis, creation of online subject and course guides and tutorials, and other duties as necessary.
 
Qualifications Required:
1.    Masters in Library or Information Science (ALA Accredited)
2.    BA/BS degree (in science, mathematics or engineering highly desirable)
3.    Significant successful professional academic reference or research service experience.
4.    Extensive knowledge and experience in one or more scientific and technical disciplines taught at NJIT.
5.    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
6.    Excellent personal and interpersonal skills (energy, creativity, initiative, friendliness, etc.).
7.    Teaching experience.
8.    Public service oriented; maintains collegial professional relationship with library faculty, students, NJIT staff, library staff, and administrators.

P/T - Reference Librarian - East Hampton Library, LI

The East Hampton Library is seeking a part-time, weekday and weekend Reference Librarian with strong public service skills, strong computer skills, and wide reading interests to join the staff of the Reference Department.

Responsibilities include:
- Providing reference services, reader's advisory services, referral
services, and instructional services to a diverse population at a busy
Reference Desk
- Assisting patrons with use of the library's public computers
- Assisting patrons in the selection and use of library materials
- Must have a sound knowledge and ability to assist patrons with e-books, and audio book downloads.
 - Must have a sound knowledge of Microsoft office.
 - Must be able to conduct computer classes for patrons.

The schedule would include one to two Saturdays per month and/or one
to two Sundays per month.

Weekday evening availability is a plus.
